WELCOME to Hangar 5.org

This site is dedicated to the young men that served at Hangar 5 in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. Hangar 5 was one of many hangars located at Base Air Depot no. 1, Burtonwood Air Depot, Warrington, England. The area where hangar 5 was located was also called Mary Ann Site.

Burtonwood Air Depot, BAD#1, is said to have been the largest air repair depot in the world at that time. Hangar 5 was known for its quality of work, and many generals airplanes were outfitted and modified in this hangar, including General Patton’s B17, General Montgomery’s C-47’s, and the C-47’s and DC-3’s of other generals. Along with the glory of working on a Generals aircraft, hangar 5 also got more than its share of the wrecks. The men working here were complimented by Captain Harold King by reiterating the hangar's motto "If you can't fix it, send it to Hangar 5".

The men were further complimented by Colonel Nophsker (sp) when he said "Generally speaking Hangar 5 has accomplished, not quantity, but quality in output. I firmly believe that straight production would have enabled Hangar 5 to equal or excel figures of other hangars at Base Air Depot No. 1. All I can say is thanks for doing such a "General" all-around good job"
